Why Organic Social Media Should Be the First Step for D2C Brands
The Impatient Founder
Picture a courtroom with two lawyers and one very anxious D2C founder sitting in the middle.
On the left: Paid Ads, fine-tuned, confident, and in an expensive suit. He promises to bring success by next Tuesday.
On the right: Organic Social, silent, and looking calm while holding a hefty stack of bill receipts.
The accusation:“Organic Social is too slow, too uncertain, and honestly a waste of time if you could just run ads.”
The Buzz Marketers have heard this heated debate played out almost in every D2C founder’s heavy-handed way. And more often than not, paid ads are the ones that get the applause and the budget before the brand is even ready to use it.
This is your defence case.
Exhibit 1: What Happens When You Skip Organic?
Meet Arjun. He started a D2C skincare brand. Good product, good packaging, some belief in what he sells. He has a ₹50L for marketing.
His friend tells him to run some Meta ads now. He says, “Organic takes too long. You need sales now.”
So Arjun launches the ads on day 3. The targeting is wide and the creative is just a photo of the product on a discount code. The landing page is the home page.
In week one: 4,000 impressions, 60 clicks and 1 sale.
He tweaks the ad and fires it up again, but only sells 2 units. He’s burning through his budget. He pulls up his Instagram; 47 followers, no post in 8 days, no stories. He clicks the ad page and lands on his page, visits his Instagram out of curiosity and leaves empty handed.
The ad was not the problem. The problem was the trust. This is what marketing a D2C brand looks like when it starts with the wrong secret sauce.
Exhibit 2: What Are The Algorithms Actually Saying?
Here’s something performance marketers often forget to start with: Meta’s ad algorithm needs data to learn from.
And the fastest source of that data comes from before you’ve spent a single rupee on ads; it starts with your organic audience.
You naturally engage with people who follow you and their content, technically know what to look for deeply. Then they hit your profile and become the first audience that helps Meta know what to look for.
An Instagram strategy for D2C brands that builds even 500 to 1000 real followers before the ads go live gives the algorithm something to amplify..With this, you get lower CPCs, higher ROAS, and CPMs that don’t make you cry.
D2C marketing in India is increasingly competitive. The brands that get the best paid ad results are almost always the ones that did a lot of organic work first.
Exhibit 3: Paid Ads Amplify.
That’s what The Buzz Marketers always say, paid ads are a megaphone, not a message.
If you don’t have a brand voice, you don’t have content that shows what the product actually does, and you don’t have social proof like reviews or user-generated content, the ad is amplified noise.
Amplified to strangers that don’t know or trust you.
A long-term e-commerce social media strategy begins with organic content proving the brand is real, the product works, and real people use it. Then, when that’s present, even in a small way, paid ads have a foundation to build upon.
In other words…
Paid ads bring someone to the door, and organic social shows them what the interior looks like as they step in. If it’s empty, they walk out.
Exhibit 4: The Brands Getting It Right
I notice that the D2C brands in India that have scaled in the last two years, whether in beauty, food, fashion, and wellness, have a common thread that isn’t spoken about enough.
They didn’t spend big money on ads before spending months making the content.
They created a point of view and proved the product by showing it used by real people.
They shared about their ingredients, process, founders. They answered every comment, posted regular content even when the numbers were tiny.
So when they began advertising, those content efforts had already engendered a group of supporters.
Which, as we know, is why supporters share, review, and buy again — and why performance marketing for D2C brands in India is profitable, not just active.
The Verdict
Back to the courtroom.
Paid Ads makes a compelling closing argument.
Fast results. Wide reach. Measurable ROI.
All of that is true.
But Organic Social has one claim to fame that’s difficult to overlook graph showing the cost per acquisition of brands that ran ads with zero organic presence versus brands that spent 60-90 days building content first. The difference is stark.
brands with zero organic presence versus brands that spent 60-90 days building content first. The difference is stark.
The jury near on their feet.
Organic Social didn’t lose because it’s better than paid ads but because it makes paid ads better.
We’re not against paid ads. We run them on clients for them all the time. But we’re not fussed about organic, or paid, or headline or email. The Buzz Marketers are just fussed about the beginning. The brands have to be made real. Consistent. Trust-worthy organically before a single rupee goes into Ads Manager. Once the paid ads deploy, they all work harder, last longer, and cost less. Ain’t that a clever strategy?
One Last Thing, Arjun
He was back.
Three months later after the ₹50k was gone, and the account only had 2 sales to show for it.
This time, The Buzz Marketers started with eight weeks of organic content, a founder story, product education, UGC from early customers, and consistent posting.
Then they ran ads. Same budget, same platform. Results were entirely different.
